Many of us make health-related resolutions especially in a new year. We make resolutions to lose weight, stop smoking or join the neighborhood health club. It is common to set high goals but experts say that setting smaller goals could do more for your health.

Small steps are achievable and are easier to fit into your daily routine. They are less overwhelming than a big, sudden change.

Here are 10 to try:

1. Stop gaining weight. Even if you gain just a few pounds every year, the extra weight adds up quickly. In ten years it can be 10-20-30-40 pounds!

2. Take more small steps. You can use a pedometer to count your daily steps; then add 2,000 steps which is the equivalent of one extra mile. Then keep adding steps, 1,000 to 2,000 each month or so, until you take 10,000 steps on most days.

3. Eat a good breakfast! Breakfast eaters tend to weigh less and have better diets overall. For a filling and nutrition-packed breakfast, top Whole Grain Total® with fresh fruit slices and milk.

4. Switch three grain servings each day to whole grain.

5. Have at least one green salad every day. Eating a salad is filling and may help you eat less during the meal. It also counts toward your five daily cups of vegetables and fruits.

6. Trim the fat wisely. Fat has a lot of calories, and calories count. Fat takes longer to absorb by your body and that means it will take longer until you get hungry again!

7. Consider calcium by including two or three daily servings of milk or yogurt. Dairy calcium is good for bones and may also help you lose weight.

8. Downsize. The smaller the bag, bottle or bowl, the less you will eat.

9. Lose just 5 to 10 percent of your current weight. The health benefits are huge with lower blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

10. Keep track of your eating. Write down what you eat over the next couple of days and look for problem spots. Often, just writing things down can help you eat less.

With bitter, winter days ahead for most of us, the thought of braving the weather to get to the gym or go for a jog doesn’t sound very appealing. Maintaining the motivation to adhere to your weight loss goals when everyone else wants to hibernate is painless with self-hypnosis for weight loss.

Then the hypnotherapist will ask you to recall a time when you were happy and excited about anything in your life.

The point of this exercise is to remember and re-experience as many sensations as you are able to from numerous times in your life when you felt motivated and eager to do anything you wanted. Then, the weight loss hypnosis therapist will ask you to anchor those feelings by simply touching two fingers together.

Next, you will be asked to visualize yourself working out and enjoying it. As you establish this mental image, you will trigger your anchor by touching those two fingers together again. When you do that, your unconscious will connect the feeling of eagerness and excitement from the other memory to the thought of exercising.

From this point on, whenever you need to feel motivated to exercise, you can simply trigger your anchor and re-experience those same positive feelings that will motivate you to workout. NLP and weight loss hypnosis can even be helpful to discourage behaviors, so you can easily overcome cravings. That sounds much easier and encouraging than beating yourself up for missing a workout or giving into temptation, doesn’t it?

A successful weight loss hypnosis program will also deal with the root cause of weight gain for many of us, namely a lack of self-esteem. In a relaxed state, you can accept post-hypnotic suggestions that will develop your self-esteem as you lose each pound. A self-esteem deficiency is a big factor in being overweight.

A lot of people wonder if, after attempting every new diet and buying every piece of exercise equipment on the market, something as straight forward as weight loss hypnosis can work for them. The good news is that research shows that all normal people are hypnotizable to a greater or lesser extent. However, it is important to note that people who have less than a 70 I.Q. or those who are in an active state of psychosis or with senility typically are not hypnotizable.

But for the rest of us, self hypnosis for weight loss can actually make us look forward to eating healthily and working out. That said, the main proponent for success in any fitness program, whether it embraces weight loss hypnosis or not, is wanting to achieve your weight loss goals.

On a related note, that is exactly why you can not force someone to undergo weight loss self hypnosis just by giving them suggestions. If someone is opposed to an idea, no amount of weight loss hypnosis they see or hear will take hold. Looking to the NLP explanation above, if someone does not have a memory of feeling motivated or positive, they can still experience success with NLP and hypnotherapy because they can visualize what it would feel like if they did feel that way, and anchor those imagined feelings.
